Open to all NZ citizens and permanent residents, and Australian citizens, aged over 16, who are not already enrolled in a government sponsored training programme.
Entry Requirements
Basic literacy and numeracy skills are required. You do not need to hold any other educational qualifications to enrol in this programme.

What will I get from this programme?
The Certificate in Small Business Management programme is designed for business owners and potential business owners. The course is very practical, and based on your own business or business idea. You will need your own business (or business idea) to work on. The aim of the programme is to offer practical assistance rather than an academic approach to learning. This course will help you make decisions about going into business and develop practical business and finance skills to assist you in business. By the end of the programme you will have completed a comprehensive business plan for your own business.
This is a level 4 NZQA approved programme. If you need business skills, then this programme could be for you. You will meet new people, and learn and practice new skills. On successful completion of this programme, you will receive a certificate in recognition of the time and effort you have put in.
What will I learn?
The programme consists of six modules.
Module 1
Introduction to Small Business Management |
This module concentrates on determining what you see as success. You will learn how to set goals and objectives, so that you know what you need to do to be successful. At the end of this module, you will have developed a strategic plan for your business.

Module 2
Introduction to Business Law |
This module introduces you to the essentials of business law. You will learn about the various business structures, consumer laws, and tax obligations. At the end of this module you will have developed a legal plan for your business.

Module 3
Introduction to Marketing |
This module focuses on how best to conduct a survey and market your business. At the end of this module, you will have developed a marketing plan for your business.

Module 4
Introduction to HR and Operations |
This module covers some legal matters not covered in Module 2 (regarding employees and pay etc), and how best to organise your premises. At the end of this module, you will have developed an HR and operations plan for your business.

Module 5
Introduction to Small Business Accounting |
This module covers bookkeeping and basic accounting concepts. At the end of this module, you will have a good understanding of reports produced by your accountant.

Module 6
Introduction to Financial Management |
This module focuses on the financials of your business, such as income, expenses, profitability and cash flow. At the end of this module you will have completed a financial plan for your business.

All modules and assessments are based around how the concepts introduced affect your business. By the end of the course, you will have completed a substantial business plan for your business.
How much will the course cost me?
There are NO FEES; there are no charges for students. This is a fully funded government programme. You will also receive a range of quality resources required to complete the programme, also at no cost.
What resources and equipment will I get?
You will receive a range of quality resources including a textbook, DVD, module books, activity books, calculator and a scrapbook. Everything you need to complete the course will be provided.
How and when will I be able to study the course?
The programme is part-time and class based. You will be part of a unique learning environment that is supportive, inclusive and interactive. Classes are held weekly with breaks scheduled to coincide with school holidays.
Where can I do the CSBM course?
Nelson classes will be held at our premises, 563 Main Road, Stoke (next door to the Mobil petrol station).
Blenheim based prgrammes are held at the Koru Institute of Training and Education, 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.
