Eligibility Requirements
Open to all NZ citizens and permanent residents, and Australian citizens, aged over 16, who are not already enrolled in a government sponsored training programme.
 
Entry Requirements
This is a more advanced business programme than the CSBM.  In addition to basic literacy and numeracy skills, you must also meet at least one of:

  • Graduate of CSBM
  • Hold a suitable business plan reviewable by us
  • Already operating in business
  • Hold a managerial position, are familiar with business planning and able to implement changes in the business

This course may not be suitable for those who have not completed any study after finishing school.  You will need access to a computer and printer to complete your assessments.

What will I get from this programme?
The Certificate in Applied Small Business Growth and Development (CABG) programme is a very practical, hands on course designed for existing business owners, managers and key staff, and based on your own business or the business that employs you.  This course helps you analyse your business in depth so that you can identify and problem solve business issues.  You then choose two key areas or projects relevant to your business to implement during the programme.  To help you stay on track, you will have the opportunity to access an experienced business mentor to assist you identify, implement and monitor your progress.  You will learn from other business owners and improve your project management skills.  You will have the opportunity to hone your presentation skills and effectively promote your business.

What will I learn?
The programme consists of three modules.

Module 1

Business Development Analysis

In this module, you will learn how to analyse your business. You discover for yourself where you could be doing better, and then do it in Module 2.

Module 2

Business Implementation Projects

This is the module where you work on your business.   The emphasis of this part of the course is you working on the business projects that you have decided need to be done to take your business further. 
To help you complete your projects and on time, you will also learn about project planning and management. 
There are also seminars on business topics delivered by both internal and external experts in their field, such as marketing specialists, business banking lenders, website developers etc.

Module 3

Business Reports and Presentations

Develop your business reporting skills.  You will also have the opportunity to hone your business presentation skills.

How much will the course cost me?
There are no charges for students; there are NO FEES.  This is a fully funded government programme.  You will also receive a range of quality resources required to complete the programme, also at no cost.

What resources and equipment will I get?
You will receive a range of quality resources including module books and a case study textbook. Everything you need to complete the course will be provided.

How and when will I be able to study the course?
The programme is part-time and class based. You will be part of a unique learning environment that is supportive, inclusive and interactive. Classes are held weekly for the duration of the 24 weeks.  In addition, you will have access to an experienced business mentor to assist you identify, implement and monitor your progress. 

Where can I do the CABG course?
Classes are held at the Barbican Training Centre, 563 Main Road, Stoke (next to the Mobil petrol station) for our Nelson based programmes, and at the Koru Institute of Training and Education, 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim for Blenheim based programmes.

What further opportunities are there?
From the CABG you could progress through to the Certificate in Money Management.
