Susan PiketSusan PiketSusan is an original born and bred Nelsonian. She is proud of her mixed Maori, Kiwi and Dutch cultural heritage. As a typical Nelsonian youth, she couldn’t wait to leave Nelson and discover the world. She studied at Avondale College in Australia reading history and accounting before embarking on her big OE to London. Susan joined Nikko Capital Management, the investment management arm of Nikko Securities (then one of the big four Japanese securities houses). She qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant, and worked her way up the corporate ladder to become the first non-Japanese woman Finance Director in the Nicam Group. After ten years with Nikko, Susan and her English husband, Graham, moved back to Nelson to be near her ageing parents. In 2003, Susan founded Barbican Consulting Limited, now known as the Barbican Training Centre. Her experiences as the owner of a SME and working for a large corporate, have given Susan a solid understanding of the challenges faced by businesses today. Susan says “I find it very rewarding to help people succeed. It’s great working with small businesses. I love helping students and clients create sustainable businesses and watching them grow. I consider it a great privilege to be able to contribute to Māori economic development in Te Tau Ihu (Nelson-Marlborough region) and within my own iwi, Rongowhakāta.” Susan is a strong believer in ongoing personal and professional development. She has completed a MBA (Master of Business Administration) through the prestigious Henley Management College in the United Kingdom, and she also holds a National Certificate in Adult Education and Training. Since returning home, Susan has held a number of voluntary governance positions in local and national Māori organisations including Kia Tau Te Rangimarie Kohanga Reo, Te Korowai Trust, Whakatu Māori Business Network, National Māori Accountants Network. She has played an active part in creating the recently formed Kōtuitui group, the National Māori Business Network. She is also part of the Post-Settlement Governance Entity workgroup for Rongowhakāta. Susan is a board member of the disaster relief charity, ADRA New Zealand. In her spare time, Susan loves to spend time with her young nephews and whanau (family), walking her dog Toblerone, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people, skiing and vegetarian cookery. She lives with her husband Graham, and mother Amiria. |
